Candle Making Workshop at The Recycled Candle Company

VIEW

No

Description

The Recycled Candle Company’s story began in 2015 when Richard, the resident candle maker, was a young boy making jam, soap, jellies and candles with his mother. This is where he first had the idea of melting down old candles that were destined for the family bin, in order to replace the wax, and make new candles. They also work closely with local businesses such as hotels and restaurants who are keen to reduce their waste.

Upon arrival you will be welcomed by a member of staff who will then provide you with a briefing on how your experience is going to unfold. During your workshop, you will be working with 100% recycled wax to create a range of beautiful fragranced candles. You will explore the fragrance library they have and you will have the opportunity to learn about every aspect of candle making, from wick sizes through to the responsible sourcing of their products.

The workshop will run from 11 am to 1 pm, then there will be an hour break to explore Exeter, have some food, and let some of the candles cool, then you'll finish them off from 2pm to 3pm. During your workshop you’ll be making a 30cl glass candle, a freestanding pillar candle and a set of firelighters.

Please be advised to wear clothes that you wouldn't mind a little bit of wax splashing on.

On arrival, you will be welcomed by a friendly member of the team. This will be then followed by a briefing on how the day is going to unfold.

The main attraction of the Cornish landscape is the pattern of small fields enclosed by hedge-banks, usually made of or faced with stone gathered locally. On this short course you will learn the basic handling of stone and use of the necessary tools, the hedging hammer and the long-handled Cornish shovel. You will be shown how to clear the gap in the hedge ready for repair, and how to choose your stone. You will understand how to use your eye to select the right shape of stone to fit into the row, and how to place the stones in accordance with the existing hedge and consolidate the fill.

Finally you will top off your mended hedge with earth and turf for a neat, secure and wildlife-friendly finish. Having completed the course you will be able to practice and improve your skill in your own time, in the creation of a newly built Cornish Hedge!
