The Charles Cotton, Hartington, Derbyshire

Helen from Customer Service, November 2022

What did you get up to?
My husband and I recently visited the quirky 17th Century Charles Cotton Country House Hotel, for a lovely one night break in the heart of the Peak District.
We arrived in the evening, and after a quick change decided to go down for drinks in the bar before having dinner in the restaurant area. It was a surprisingly vibrant atmosphere despite the small village location and we enjoyed a delicious home cooked 3 course meal each, before wandering out to the village for an evening walk and a few more drinks in another local pub.
In the morning we had a choice of tables to sit at in the impressive ornate dining hall, all overlooking the beautiful village square, and enjoyed our Derbyshire cooked breakfast.

What did you enjoy the most?
Without doubt the best part of this was exploring the surroundings. The hotel is in a fantastic location for exploring the Peak District, and after our breakfast we decided to join a few other guests on one of the famous local walks.

Top Tip

1. Make a full weekend of it, arriving as early as possible the day you check in, or staying in the area a little longer on the day you check out, so that you have time to fully explore and appreciate the stunning Peak district
2. I would recommend the restaurant for your evening dinner, delicious home cooked food!
3. Pop over the road to the cosy Devonshire Arms for a few drinks if you have time, and check out Hartington Farm Shop before heading home!

Short stay at the Clifton Hotel

Yes I recommend this product.

I have left a glowing report on tripadvisor, and we enjoyed the experience so much I have written to the owner. A delightful quiet calm hotel with the most exquisite sea views. The quality and service is exceptional, there are quiet spots on the veranda where one can read, paint, etc, and in inclement weather the same views can be enjoyed from inside. A quiet garden to enjoy and relax. The quality of the furnishings is superb and David, owner, certainly knows how to present and deliver a first class experience. Breakfast menu is excellent, light meals are available during the day.

Lovely setting for this place, room good apart from a few cleanliness problems , marks on the bedsheet and stain on the bath mat and a few bits of confetti not been cleaned up. Food was good and breakfast was ok

The hotel was great and no problems with our stay. My issue was the cost of the activity at 119 pounds. We could have booked on numerous sites for less than 90pounds. Don't waste your money on this activity.

Stayed at this hotel one night midweek in September. On arrival receptionist very polite and helpful. The room was spacious, and clean although view to side of hotel and not very nice. The breakfast service and food was excellent, nothing too much trouble for staff. Great stay would go again but ask for room at the front.

Enjoyed a lovely weekend at The Limes. Excellent accommodation, service etc. Food was really nice and home cooked. Weather was good so we could enjoy drinks in the gardens. Small note for future visitors - Accommodations are accessed externally which could be drawback in inclement weather.

The positives were the staff & food - reception etc couldn't have been lovelier when we checked in and everyone was very friendly. The food was also surprisingly good, limited menu but very tasty and cooked perfectly for both breakfast and also the dinner we paid extra for (not cheap but very pleasant). Overall we were very disappointed with this 1 night break at Manor of Groves Hotel. I wasn't expecting 5* standards but this place is so run down it is unbelievable - I am a facilities manager so look after buildings for a living and was shocked at how tired the place was and a total mess with no maintenance happening here at all for quite some time. Room was awful location overlooking the rear of the restaurant but I could cope with that, however sink taps barely worked in the bathroom with bits missing, a half painted ceiling, mattress so soft that 2 of you just rolled together in a big pile and when I had a shower the next morning the rail holding the shower head fell off the wall! There was a bag of dirty laundry at the top of the stairs near our room which sat there for our entire visit. This place needs a total renovation. The spa was also a huge disappointment, the reason I picked this location was due to the spa facilities and we were looking forward to just getting to relax in a jacuzzi / sauna / pool etc for an hour before dinner. When we walked into the pool area it was absolutely full of screaming children with floaties, had no idea it was open to the public and was worse than a local council pool so we made a quick exit. Half the showers and lockers were also broken so there is literally no maintenance going on at this hotel at all.

Lovely break, our room was in the annexe and was spacious and clean. It is typical of a UK hotel where proper maintenance would improve the appearance and operation. Ok so it won't win any prizes but the restaurant food was lovely and the breakfast for us was adequate.
