Overview

Get ready for a day of adventure when you travel back in time with our steam train experience for two. Steam trains are an iconic part of British history, dating back over 200 years to 1804, when they were invented by Cornishman Richard Trevithick. Immerse yourself in nostalgia as you journey through unspoilt English countryside, traversing rolling hills and verdant fields. Relax and create unforgettable memories on this day trip that captures the simplicity of a bygone era.

With a wide array of scenic locations to choose from, you can explore different parts of England while enjoying the charm of the steam train. Some locations even offer a whole day rover ticket, allowing you the freedom to hop on and off along the route. This flexibility is perfect for sightseeing, indulging in a coffee at a local cafe, or having a delightful picnic amidst nature's beauty.

Please note that if the steam train is unavailable for reasons beyond the control of the venue, it may be replaced by a diesel train to ensure that your experience continues uninterrupted.

So, if you're ready to travel back in time and relish the allure of steam-powered locomotion, our steam train experience for two is the perfect way to make memories that will last a lifetime. All aboard for an adventure you won't soon forget!

Nene Valley Railway Ltd, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

Carla from Contracting, October 2022

What did you get up to?
We arrived at Nene Valley Railway, Wansford a little early, so we sat in the Café and had a Cornish pasty and Cappuccino. We then went outside and walked about until it was time to board the train. You had a choice of private booths or public, we decided on a private booth. First stop Yarwell this is the end of the track in the opposite direction to Peterborough. On route you go through a tunnel that lasts approx. 2 minutes our very knowledgeable conductor Andrew told us that this was the tunnel that was used in the James Bond movie Octopussy. We got off while we waited for the train engine to turn around to go back to Wansford and onto Peterborough, first stop on the journey to Peterborough is Overton where we stepped off for 5 minutes to take in the lovely morning sun and waited for more passengers to board, next stop Orton. Once we got to Peterborough, we took a lovely stroll into town, where we wondered about the malls and shops. On our way back to the station for our journey back home, we stopped along the canal and watch the people feeding the duck and swans. On our journey back we decided to sit in the public booths, we ordered something to drink from the Buffet car on the train, it is very well stocked with food, drinks and all sorts. There are lovely little gift shops at all the stations where you are able to purchase memorabilia or some lovely goodies.
What did you enjoy the most?
Our favourite part of this experience was chatting to Andrew the conductor whom is very knowledgeable and just taking in the lovely country side. The sheer beauty of the Autunm colours with the changing season.

Steam train and cream tea

Yes I recommend this product.

The gift was great, but the title was misleading. Realised, when reading the detail, that it was not a cream tea on a train. However The train trip was excellent. Lovely people, very welcoming. All very well kept.

When I received the gift of a heritage railway day out I wondered where to go that would not involve a taxi to the middle of nowhere. The Nene Valley is the ideal location as I could get a frequent train from Kings Cross to. Peterborough and join the railway nearby. We set off and at Peterborough station took a Bolt minitcab to the start of the railway, bur the driver confused himself and took us to Oveton - Ferry Meadows by mistake. This worked out well as we were able to get refreshmetnts and sit on the station in the sunshine and enjoy the atmosphere and meet really friendly volunteers. A further advantage was that we joined the first train into Peterborough, then had the journey to Wansford beginning to end to enjoy. I was not so enthusiastic about the diesel hauled rake as it was not so exciting as steam but I joined the steam hauled connection to Yarwell Junction. That was an exciting bit -short but atmospheric. Back again in Wansford we had an very good lunch then a wander round looking at the exhibits and rolling stock - used and unused these days - imagined journeys in by gone days. In all a relaxing but occupied day out. The warm sunny day made it easy to get around and no need to take cover to hide from the rain as was the case the previous bank holiday weekend when we were glad we changed our plans.
