Overview

Get ready for a day of adventure when you travel back in time with our steam train experience for two. Steam trains are an iconic part of British history, dating back over 200 years to 1804, when they were invented by Cornishman Richard Trevithick. Immerse yourself in nostalgia as you journey through unspoilt English countryside, traversing rolling hills and verdant fields. Relax and create unforgettable memories on this day trip that captures the simplicity of a bygone era.

With a wide array of scenic locations to choose from, you can explore different parts of England while enjoying the charm of the steam train. Some locations even offer a whole day rover ticket, allowing you the freedom to hop on and off along the route. This flexibility is perfect for sightseeing, indulging in a coffee at a local cafe, or having a delightful picnic amidst nature's beauty.

Please note that if the steam train is unavailable for reasons beyond the control of the venue, it may be replaced by a diesel train to ensure that your experience continues uninterrupted.

Nene Valley Railway Ltd, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

Carla from Contracting, October 2022

What did you get up to?
We arrived at Nene Valley Railway, Wansford a little early, so we sat in the Café and had a Cornish pasty and Cappuccino. We then went outside and walked about until it was time to board the train. You had a choice of private booths or public, we decided on a private booth. First stop Yarwell this is the end of the track in the opposite direction to Peterborough. On route you go through a tunnel that lasts approx. 2 minutes our very knowledgeable conductor Andrew told us that this was the tunnel that was used in the James Bond movie Octopussy. We got off while we waited for the train engine to turn around to go back to Wansford and onto Peterborough, first stop on the journey to Peterborough is Overton where we stepped off for 5 minutes to take in the lovely morning sun and waited for more passengers to board, next stop Orton. Once we got to Peterborough, we took a lovely stroll into town, where we wondered about the malls and shops. On our way back to the station for our journey back home, we stopped along the canal and watch the people feeding the duck and swans. On our journey back we decided to sit in the public booths, we ordered something to drink from the Buffet car on the train, it is very well stocked with food, drinks and all sorts. There are lovely little gift shops at all the stations where you are able to purchase memorabilia or some lovely goodies.
What did you enjoy the most?
Our favourite part of this experience was chatting to Andrew the conductor whom is very knowledgeable and just taking in the lovely country side. The sheer beauty of the Autunm colours with the changing season.

Our visit to the East Somerset Railway was very pleasant. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. Although a relatively small set up, compared to some, it was all well presented and the David Shepard gallery very good. The trip was supposed to be a "steam and cream tea experience", when it came to booking, the website did not allow us to book both on the same day so we are going to go somewhere else for our tea. This was all the more annoying because, when we were at the railway, there was a board displaying which coach to go to for the cream tea. I think this is a failing of the experience company and not the railway.

No I do not recommend this product.

Unfortunately the weather was very wet. The length of track and journey time was short. But it was a steam train 🚂. There was a very limited choice of venues. It would be better if there are more options

Hello, thank you for your feedback. We're glad you enjoyed the steam train itself, though we understand the wet weather and short journey made the experience feel limited. We also appreciate your comments about venue choices and will share this with our team as we work to improve our range of options.

Disappointing

No I do not recommend this product.

Not a venue that is blessed with much money, the scheduled steam engine was not available for the early services and the replacement diesel engine broke down during the first run of the day. the run was very slow. Steam was seen as water was hosed onto the radiator to cool the diesel engine down at the end. The next scheduled service was cancelled and although a steam engine was promised later in the day, there was not enough of interest on site to keep us waiting in the hope. The staff/volunteers tried, but they little to work with.

Hello Bill, thank you for sharing your experience. We're sorry to hear the visit didn’t live up to expectations, especially with the steam engine unavailable and the issues that followed. It’s clear the team on-site did their best under the circumstances, but we understand how disappointing it must have been, particularly with limited things to do while waiting. Your comments will be passed on to help improve the experience for future visitors.

No I do not recommend this product.

I brought this voucher thinking I would get afternoon tea on a steam train for myself and my wife, when I found out they were two separate experiences I was disappointed as it was sold as has afternoon tea on a steam train. We went to the Shepton Mallet railway station which is very rundown we had a trip on the steam train of three miles then was brought back to the Shipton Mallet station we had the chance of having four separate trains to pull the coaches the three miles and back again as the weather was not good we decided to leave the site after the first trip, if I known more about the station I would probably not of chose this station. This needs to be sold as two separate vouchers because it is very misleading having them on the front of the voucher

Grace.Fallon - Supplier Team

Hello Andy, thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear the experience didn’t meet your expectations, especially with how it was presented. Within the description of this voucher on our website, we state "Whether enjoyed on the same day as the steam train ride or saved for another cherished occasion, your delightful afternoon tea will be savoured at a separate location from the train experience." But we apologise if this wasn't made clear enough and will look to see how this can be improved to avoid any future confusion. It’s also disappointing to hear that the condition of your chosen station left you underwhelmed. Your comments are valuable and will be passed on to help improve the experience.

No I do not recommend this product.

Station was fine and staff lovely, although nobody seemed to know where we should sit. Kept getting moved from our seats, and eventually put ourselves in a closed compartment where we were told we could stay if we tidied up after ourselves! Train was fine, but route was an uninspiring straight line out and back. Not much too look at.

Very enjoyable day out, unlimited journeys. Excellent friendly staff, all volunteers, plenty to see and do, including longest and most complex miniature model railway taking over 5 years to complete. All visitors enjoying the day, including young children. Lucky to see both Britania and Trident (in for repair)
