This majestic vehicle has been around for over 200 years and was a key part in the growth of the Industrial Revolution. Seeing these trains up close and in all their glory brings a real sense of history to your day.
Britain boasts more railway attractions per square mile than any other country in the world. And with 100 heritage railways, 60 steam museum centres and 700 operational engines, all supported by an legion of 23,000 enthusiastic volunteers, a day out on a steam train offers people the chance to savour a bygone age of riding aboard a lovingly preserved locomotive.
Unlike the usual trip on commuter trains, this is one train journey you will not want to hurry by quickly. Instead, sit back and relax and enjoy the ride as you meander through some of the most glorious and unspoiled parts of the English countryside.
This is a fantastic day out for both adults and kids, and with a choice of scenic locations to choose from is a great way to see different parts of the country while travelling in style.
When you arrive at the venue, you will need to exchange your voucher at the ticket office for your family steam train tickets. The experience varies depending on the location you choose. Some journeys are return trips while others are all day rovers and you may be able to stop off en route to explore the local area on foot. Depending on the location, you may be able to visit other attractions at the venue such as a steam train museum.
This experience is available on selected dates, typically March to October, however some locations are available throughout the year.
The experience can last from 35 minutes to a full day.
There will be other people there on the day.
You are more than welcome to bring friends and family, however, they will have to pay on the day.
Minimum age restrictions apply, under 17's must be accompanied by an adult.
This voucher is valid for a minimum of two adults and two children, depending on location, and excludes special event days.

We arrived at our chosen station to be told that, rather than the steam train we were expecting, on that day only diesel trains would be running. To make matters worse, we were forced to turn back after only a couple of miles due to cattle on the track. Overall a very disappointing experience.

Great day out. Once you've got your tickets you're free to ride as many trains as you want. The staff are brilliant. There is a café which is very reasonably priced. There is information dotted around the station and a waiting room with memorabilia. Also a work shop where trains are fixed. Plenty do do and see regardless of the weather. Great day out. Perfect for adults and kids too

We really enjoyed are day out here, there is so much to do and different things to do and each of the platforms. Can just hop on and off where you like, it’s so much fun when they have an event on to. They had a 1940s weekend when we went and they was all dressed up, music and decorations from that year I definitely recommend this place

Arrived for the 10am departure, was fold all 3 steam trains were broken! So we had to have one of the diesel electrics! The train left the station went one stop stayed there for 15 minutes and went back to where we started! Waited there for another 10 minutes and then departed for Peterborough, which was only four stops away, stopping at each station for between 5 and 15 minutes. We were told the duration of the trip is 90 minutes it is nothing like that. We enjoyed the short time we were travelling, the stations are well kept and the staff were friendly. We got off at the country park and had lunch. Overall the trip was rather disappointing.

I can only apologise that you did not get to enjoy the steam train on the day of your experience, and can appreciate any disappointment caused. Whilst the train stops for a short duration at each location, the trains make hourly trips, meaning you are able to stay for as long as you like and ride back on a later train. I do apologise however if this was not obvious to you during the day.
