Spend the day on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway learning about and trying your hand at the operation of heritage diesel trains in a group with one of our friendly drivers.
One of our experienced drivers will introduce you to railway operations in the morning and you will take it in turns to drive the 18 mile return journey between Wirksworth in the Derbyshire Peak District and Duffield just north of Derby, in a 1950s heritage Diesel Railcar.
Guests can ride in the passenger saloon and take in the beautiful views of the countryside whilst you’re driving.
Lunch will then be served in our Pullman Buffet at Wirksworth Station for yourself and one guest and additional guests may purchase off the menu. The afternoon allows you opportunity to get to grips with a large main line heritage diesel locomotive as you do the 18 mile return journey once more taking it in turns with your fellow experience guests.
A Guard's brake van is normally attached so that guests can ride behind the locomotive whilst you're driving, they can stand on the veranda whilst you’re going along in summer or have the wood-burning stove lit to keep warm in winter!
This experience is available on selected weekdays and weekends, throughout the year.
This experience will last for approximately 6 hours.
This experience is for one person, Lunch is included for two people. There will be other people on the day.
You are able to bring spectators on the day.
The minimum age for this experience is 18 years old.
You must be able to climb in and out of the locomotive from ground level.
There are no qualifications required for this experience.

Managed to drive two loco's on an eight-mile track, under the super guidance of two humourous enthusiasts. We all had a great day with a great meal in the local pub. Well worth the expense

As it said on the tin. Staff were good so no complaints there. We were promised a meal on a Pullman car but instead ended up at a pub. The line itself (Ecclesbourne Valley) is not very picturesque but the organisers can't help that.

Overall was a good day but good even be better if it was a guided tour around the premises. We was shown around the trains workshop but Unfortunately no info ref the trains was given. When questions were ask the young man had no answers. It was a silence walk around the workshop. Good venue with loads of opportunities to make it a perfect day, just a shame it was not used.

Great day out had by all. Instructor staff ensured the (standard) group of 4 "drivers" all had equal driving experience - a stint down hill from Wirksworth & stint uphill from Duffield - with both the morning DMU & afternoon Class 47. We had a very warm day - recommend you take a drink (water) with you. Event was on a "non-running" day, so we were able to be little more leisurely rather than having to fit between timetabled trains. Driver's Guests (partners) were able to ride in the DMU during the morning & all appeared to enjoy, but were not able to travel in the afternoon - Insurance prevents the loco from pulling stock & not enough room in loco cabs. Reasonable buffet lunch provided - sandwiches sausage rolls, pork pie, crisps, cake and drink with plenty to spare. A guided visit around the yard & shed was included - make sure you have good footwear! Drivers badge & experience Certificate provided. We were lucky as had the loco & DMU preferred but it what you get to drive can be random depending on operational availability of stock.
