We had over fifty miles to drive to get to the venue, which was the nearest on the list to where we live. This was the second time to the same place. Was it worth the journey? No, but we had to go otherwise the money spent om the gift we were given would have been lost.
I am dairy free and told them in advance of us going. The first time we were there they had properly prepared the afternoon tea with one for myself and one for my wife. This last time the kitchen had obviously not got the message about me being dairy free as they brought a normal afternoon tea for both of us to share. After being asked if it was dairy free they took it away and eventually
brought a selection of food which was the same for both of us. Bearing in mind there normal price for afternoon tea is £24 per person. This is considerably more than the value of the voucher, therefore what we received was was reduced accordingly.

Experience bought for us by our children. Booking easy to complete online. Venue very quiet. We were the only ones having an afternoon tea and there was only 1 other person in the same room. We booked a venue for whilst we were on holiday which did limit our choice. As a Coeliac I would have liked my GF savoury on a proper platter instead of just a plate of rolls cut in half and perhaps sandwiches so it was not an obvious difference or both of us to have rolls. Whilst this is possibly a caters way of distinguishing the difference to aid the server when there are dietary requirements, it highlights an inequality as there was also less choice/ when compared to a "normal" platter. As GF only had 2 choices of savoury whilst my husband had 3 but I had more savoury which was wasted as it was too much. Service was attentive.

Original confirmation date had been put to a completely different location which caused some distress. The young lady at The Red Lion Colchester had to sort another day for us.

Venue did not fit an afternoon tea, not a traditional tea and there was no one else in there so no atmosphere. I know it was a Sunday maybe venue not right for a tea I felt awarded being there. Food was ok all I wanted was sandwiches and a scone

Hotel looks quite shabby from outside and needs a serious overhaul both inside and out. Sent through to restaurant where only 1 staff member working. Waited to be seated amongst tables that needed clearing. Waitress eventually came to us and took drinks order, but came back with tea instead of the tea and coffee ordered. Food arrived and it looked like it had been prepared some time in advance. Wouldn’t be hurrying back and wouldn’t recommend.

VERY disappointed. What we had to eat was OK but it was NOT an afternoon tea in any traditional way. I was uncomfortable in the venue being obviously for young people wanting cheap booze. The young man serving was very pleasant and reasonably efficient - really very, very disappointed.

Very hard to find this hotel on one way system. Staff were absolutely lovely but was disappointed with the cakes. Tiny little strange tasting assortment. We didn't enjoy any of them unfortunately. Scones were huge but pretty dry with a bit of an aftertaste

Took my daughter for her birthday as she likes afternoon tea and I just don’t think it was worth it. The staff were really nice and as I asked, they put a candle on one of the cakes and sang happy birthday to her which was so so nice of them to do but the afternoon tea wouldn’t have been worth the money I’m afraid. We got our drinks so quickly, by the time afternoon tea was there everything was ice cold. Wouldn’t go again. Cup was chipped too.

The worst afternoon tea I’ve ever had.
The food was nothing like it said it would be.
It wasn’t the right sort of venue either for afternoon tea.
