Originally booked my “Beer Master Class and Burger Meal for Two” to take place in the Hoxton Brewhouse & Kitchen. Booking was very easy, just had to give them a call and they took my voucher and activation number, offered me a couple of time slots within the next 4 weeks and I was booked. Unfortunately the day before my activity Hoxton Brewhouse called to say their beer expert was unavailable due to a car accident and so I was offered either to rebook for another day or move venue to the Islington Brewhouse & Kitchen, I chose to move venue and they seamlessly organised this with no hassle at all.
On arrival at Islington Brewhouse I was very impressed, the venue is big inside and nicely decorated to give that pub/brewery feel, there is also a lovely little beer garden outside which is a great spot for people watching! The bar staff directed us to a long table where we would be sat for the tasting and we were made to feel very welcome.
To start the tasting the beer expert gave us a rundown of what we would be doing over the coming few hours, he gave great insight to how beer is made, how beer should be served, and of course how beer should be drank. He was very knowledgeable, answered any questions and made sure everyone was interacting.
For the actual beer tasting we then sampled 8 very different beers, from an India pale ale, through to stout and smoked beer. Each beer was served freshly poured, in the correct glass and a generous 1/3 pint measure. The beer expert would talk through the different hops and barley type in each beer and how this affects the taste/aroma/look of the beer, he would also give a brief insight into where each beer type originated and why. We had a notes sheet as well to write our thoughts on the beers so you could remember which your favourite was. Throughout the beer tasting the bar staff were bringing over nuts and other snacks for everyone to enjoy.
Following the beer tasting we were given a reduced menu to choose our food from, this had 3 different burgers (including vegan), fish and chips and a Buddha Bowl. We could then move to our own table to enjoy the food and sample another beer from their extensive collection (at our own expense).
All in the experience took just over 2 hours, slightly longer than advertised, but this was due to our group asking loads of questions and the beer expert making it a very interactive session which was great. I would definitely recommend giving this a go if you want to learn about, and try some amazing styles of beer that you may not order in a pub!
Don't have a big breakfast before going, there is a lot of food and drink to consume.
