We headed to Target Sports World in Romford to try our hand at compound archery, and it turned out to be one of those experiences that's much harder than you think, but very satisfying when you hit the target.
After a safety briefing and an introduction to the equipment, our instructor Abi showed us how to use the compound bows. She explained and demonstrated everything clearly, making sure we felt comfortable before stepping up to the shooting line as there is quite a lot to think about. Abi put us at ease, was super-friendly and non-judgemental even when we missed the target. Surprisingly, we were both hitting the target within our first six shots – albeit on the outer rings.
The bows are powerful but easy to handle, and there's a real sense of achievement every time you hear an arrow hit the target. As our confidence grew, so did our competitive streak, with plenty of friendly rivalry developing throughout the session, culminating in a points competition. With “Eye of the Tiger” playing at full blast I managed to beat Shaun - 34 points to 33 (which made my day!)
Between each round, Abi advised on adjusting our posture or by making small changes to the bow to improve our aim. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, and it was a fun hour spent learning a new skill.

And did I mention that I beat Shaun?
