Overview

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. It has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years and is today one of the official residences of His Majesty The King.

Occupying over 10.5 hectares, the Castle offers a varied day out for visitors, including a visit to the magnificent State Apartments and St George's Chapel. The Castle's State Apartments are furnished with some of the finest works from the Royal Collection, reflecting the changing tastes of the Castle's royal occupants, particularly those of Charles II and George IV.

Among the masterpieces on display are paintings by Holbein, Rubens and Van Dyck, Sèvres porcelain and exquisite English and French furniture. Many of the works of art are still in the historic settings for which they were first collected or commissioned by the kings and queens who have lived at Windsor.

Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the Castle with a free multimedia tour. From March to October, visitors can also walk through the sumptuous Semi-State Apartments, which served as the private rooms of George IV in the 19th century. Refreshments can be enjoyed in the Undercroft Café, situated in one of the oldest medieval parts of the Castle.

Located opposite Windsor Castle, enjoy a well-earned relaxing cream tea with a glass of bubbles at Clarence Brasserie. The Clarence brasserie and tearoom is located in the heart of Windsor, just a couple of minutes’ walk along the cobbled Church Street from Windsor Castle.

Serving a traditional cream tea with fluffy scones and dainty sandwiches and a vast selection of teas range from the pink and fruity to the smooth and authentic. It is a quintessential English tearoom, with staff who have the desire to make your experience of this historic and stunning location as delightful as possible.

What did your experience entail?
After the recent coronation of King Charles III, I treated my mother to a quintessentially British experience at Windsor Castle, accompanied by a delightful Sparkling Cream Tea. The vastness of the castle grounds astounded us, providing ample freedom to explore at our leisure. The staff members were remarkably friendly and attentive, and the castle's impressive accessibility, considering its origins in 1070, left us in awe. While on the grounds, we visited King George VI's Memorial Chapel and paid our respects at the final resting place of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
After immersing ourselves in the castle's wonders, including the state rooms and Queen Mary's Dolls' House, we made our way to the brasserie for our cream tea experience. The Clarence Court Brasserie, conveniently located on Church Street just beyond the castle's main gate, welcomed us warmly. A friendly server greeted us, collected our voucher and escorted us to our table. The service proved highly efficient, as within minutes of settling in, we were served with tea and a glass of bubbly. Shortly after we enjoyed the traditional sandwiches, scones, cream, and jam that followed.
What did you enjoy the most?
The best part for us was that we skipped a ginormous queue at Windsor Castle as we had vouchers. We were escorted to a designated “Voucher Holders” entrance and were in the castle much faster than those waiting to buy tickets on the day.

Top Tip

1. There is a lovely café on the castle grounds which offer some delicious cakes, but don’t fill up too much as you have a cream tea to look forward to.
2. Look out for and be respectful of The Foot Guards patrolling Windsor Castle – don’t get in the way!

Cream tea

No I do not recommend this product.

A lovely time spent in Windsor Castle but the afternoon tea was very disappointing. Four fingers of sandwiches each. Two cream cheese and cucumber and two egg. Pathetic size. No cakes but a scone each with jam and cream. I bought this as a birthday gift for a friend and was embarrassed and disappointed.

The Windsor castle part of the experience. Was great we had a lovely time and the castle itself was amazing. The cream tea was below average, very uninspiring sandwiches, and only 2 of them and 1 scone, the tea and Prosecco arrived a long time before the sandwiches and scone, so all in all very poor. I would not purchase this type of experience again.

Windsor Castle and afternoon tea

No I do not recommend this product.

Windsor Castle was very good, we felt very comfortable with the security and the staff. Any questions we had were answered and the staff were very knowledgeable. The only problem with the experience was the afternoon tea. One round of sandwiches no cake and only a scone with jam cad cream. That is not an afternoon tea, that is a cream tea.

Yes I recommend this product.

We really enjoyed our trip to Windsor castle, we probably could have spent a lot more time in there as there is so much to see.Unfortunatly we never got into the brasserie as I had not got the necessary email from hospitality, this may have gone into my spam folder & didn't realise. The staff at Windsor castle were brilliant they took what paperwork I had with the code I had been given & done whatever they needed to do & we went into the castle for our tour. But the brasserie were not interested at all, very disappointed.

Entrance to the castle was efficiently done. The castle tour very interesting with many well known paintings by old masters (Rubens, Van Dyke, Breugel, etc). Friendly and helpful welcome at the tea rooms. My only complaint is the quantity of food. I have had larger teas for two at a number of garden centres.

No I do not recommend this product.

Horrible queues and some unfriendly “job’s worth” stewards at the castle detracted from what could have been a brilliant day. We made the mistake of booking during the Easter holidays and couldn’t face another queue for the doll’s house. On the other hand, the staff at the tea room were charming and efficient. Very acceptable afternoon tea and we were ready to sit down.

Windsor castle is spectacular. Visit was well organised. Sparkling cream tea was underwhelming! Pathetic offering- one cup of tea, one glass prosecco, four fingers of sandwich and a scone.

Lovely day out. Enjoyed everything even the queues for certain things like Queen Mary’s dolls house. All the staff in the castle very helpful and the tea afterwards was really tasty and lovely way to finish the day!
