The Nene Valley Railway

Karen from our Customer Testing Panel, July 2025

Experience Day Review
Step back into the bygone era of rail travel as soon as you set foot in the ticket office at The Nene Valley Railway. A hop-on-hop-off ticket allows you to explore areas such as the Ferry Meadows Country Park. All the staff are volunteers and obviously love what they do and are therefore very friendly and informative.

If you choose to take the afternoon tea on the same day, a fifteen-minute walk from Peterborough station takes you to The Bull Hotel, a 17th Century, Grade II listed building. The tea is a good stop off on your train journey, but I wouldn’t choose it for a special occasion. The whole experience was thoroughly enjoyable and is highly recommended for a day out.”

Our visit to the East Somerset Railway was very pleasant. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. Although a relatively small set up, compared to some, it was all well presented and the David Shepard gallery very good. The trip was supposed to be a "steam and cream tea experience", when it came to booking, the website did not allow us to book both on the same day so we are going to go somewhere else for our tea. This was all the more annoying because, when we were at the railway, there was a board displaying which coach to go to for the cream tea. I think this is a failing of the experience company and not the railway.

Unfortunately the weather was very wet. The length of track and journey time was short. But it was a steam train 🚂. There was a very limited choice of venues. It would be better if there are more options

Hello, thank you for your feedback. We're glad you enjoyed the steam train itself, though we understand the wet weather and short journey made the experience feel limited. We also appreciate your comments about venue choices and will share this with our team as we work to improve our range of options.

Disappointing

No I do not recommend this product.

Not a venue that is blessed with much money, the scheduled steam engine was not available for the early services and the replacement diesel engine broke down during the first run of the day. the run was very slow. Steam was seen as water was hosed onto the radiator to cool the diesel engine down at the end. The next scheduled service was cancelled and although a steam engine was promised later in the day, there was not enough of interest on site to keep us waiting in the hope. The staff/volunteers tried, but they little to work with.

Grace.Fallon - Supplier Team

Hello Bill, thank you for sharing your experience. We're sorry to hear the visit didn’t live up to expectations, especially with the steam engine unavailable and the issues that followed. It’s clear the team on-site did their best under the circumstances, but we understand how disappointing it must have been, particularly with limited things to do while waiting. Your comments will be passed on to help improve the experience for future visitors.

Afternoon tea

Colly - Verified purchaser

No I do not recommend this product.

We had over fifty miles to drive to get to the venue, which was the nearest on the list to where we live. This was the second time to the same place. Was it worth the journey? No, but we had to go otherwise the money spent om the gift we were given would have been lost. I am dairy free and told them in advance of us going. The first time we were there they had properly prepared the afternoon tea with one for myself and one for my wife. This last time the kitchen had obviously not got the message about me being dairy free as they brought a normal afternoon tea for both of us to share. After being asked if it was dairy free they took it away and eventually brought a selection of food which was the same for both of us. Bearing in mind there normal price for afternoon tea is £24 per person. This is considerably more than the value of the voucher, therefore what we received was was reduced accordingly.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your second visit didn’t live up to your first, especially after making such a long journey. We understand how frustrating it must have been for your dietary needs to be overlooked, and for the experience to feel reduced in value. Your comments are appreciated and will be shared with the venue to help improve both preparation and consistency going forward.

Very disappointed

No I do not recommend this product.

I brought this voucher thinking I would get afternoon tea on a steam train for myself and my wife, when I found out they were two separate experiences I was disappointed as it was sold as has afternoon tea on a steam train. We went to the Shepton Mallet railway station which is very rundown we had a trip on the steam train of three miles then was brought back to the Shipton Mallet station we had the chance of having four separate trains to pull the coaches the three miles and back again as the weather was not good we decided to leave the site after the first trip, if I known more about the station I would probably not of chose this station. This needs to be sold as two separate vouchers because it is very misleading having them on the front of the voucher

Hello Andy, thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear the experience didn’t meet your expectations, especially with how it was presented. Within the description of this voucher on our website, we state "Whether enjoyed on the same day as the steam train ride or saved for another cherished occasion, your delightful afternoon tea will be savoured at a separate location from the train experience." But we apologise if this wasn't made clear enough and will look to see how this can be improved to avoid any future confusion. It’s also disappointing to hear that the condition of your chosen station left you underwhelmed. Your comments are valuable and will be passed on to help improve the experience.

Nice but some attention to presentation needed

Yes I recommend this product.

Experience bought for us by our children. Booking easy to complete online. Venue very quiet. We were the only ones having an afternoon tea and there was only 1 other person in the same room. We booked a venue for whilst we were on holiday which did limit our choice. As a Coeliac I would have liked my GF savoury on a proper platter instead of just a plate of rolls cut in half and perhaps sandwiches so it was not an obvious difference or both of us to have rolls. Whilst this is possibly a caters way of distinguishing the difference to aid the server when there are dietary requirements, it highlights an inequality as there was also less choice/ when compared to a "normal" platter. As GF only had 2 choices of savoury whilst my husband had 3 but I had more savoury which was wasted as it was too much. Service was attentive.

Venue did not fit an afternoon tea, not a traditional tea and there was no one else in there so no atmosphere. I know it was a Sunday maybe venue not right for a tea I felt awarded being there. Food was ok all I wanted was sandwiches and a scone
