The Nene Valley Railway

Karen from our Customer Testing Panel, July 2025

Experience Day Review
Step back into the bygone era of rail travel as soon as you set foot in the ticket office at The Nene Valley Railway. A hop-on-hop-off ticket allows you to explore areas such as the Ferry Meadows Country Park. All the staff are volunteers and obviously love what they do and are therefore very friendly and informative.

If you choose to take the afternoon tea on the same day, a fifteen-minute walk from Peterborough station takes you to The Bull Hotel, a 17th Century, Grade II listed building. The tea is a good stop off on your train journey, but I wouldn’t choose it for a special occasion. The whole experience was thoroughly enjoyable and is highly recommended for a day out.”

Lovely welcome from the staff. My husband is diabetic and they provided a lovely tea for him with fresh fruit and cheese scones etc. The service was very good. The building was a bit tired on the outside when you sat in the courtyard but overall we had a great experience.

Tea was very nice, the hotel is stunning but as there was only one other couple having tea it was a bit soulless in the large Orangery. The service was good once we got the tea but had to wait a while to be served it.

When I received the gift of a heritage railway day out I wondered where to go that would not involve a taxi to the middle of nowhere. The Nene Valley is the ideal location as I could get a frequent train from Kings Cross to. Peterborough and join the railway nearby. We set off and at Peterborough station took a Bolt minitcab to the start of the railway, bur the driver confused himself and took us to Oveton - Ferry Meadows by mistake. This worked out well as we were able to get refreshmetnts and sit on the station in the sunshine and enjoy the atmosphere and meet really friendly volunteers. A further advantage was that we joined the first train into Peterborough, then had the journey to Wansford beginning to end to enjoy. I was not so enthusiastic about the diesel hauled rake as it was not so exciting as steam but I joined the steam hauled connection to Yarwell Junction. That was an exciting bit -short but atmospheric. Back again in Wansford we had an very good lunch then a wander round looking at the exhibits and rolling stock - used and unused these days - imagined journeys in by gone days. In all a relaxing but occupied day out. The warm sunny day made it easy to get around and no need to take cover to hide from the rain as was the case the previous bank holiday weekend when we were glad we changed our plans.

This was a voucher gift for two people. We chose the Abbey tea rooms as it wasn’t too far from Clarke’s Shopping village at Street.. Glastonbury was very busy that day but managed to park on the side road next to Morrisons. About five or six minutes walk we were there. We had pre booked by phone two weeks before with a very helpful young man. The tea rooms were very busy but the same young man greeted us and once we gave him our name he showed us to our reserved table. There were various options on the cream tea menu’s and we were told we could change things about if we didn’t fancy something. We didn’t have to wait long for ours to arrive at the table. It was presented as you would expect a cream tea to be. The sandwiches, cakes and scones and cream were delicious not forgetting the pot of tea.Would highly recommend the Abbey Tearooms. in Glastonbury and will be visiting again sometime soon.

Beautiful little restaurant, very clean and well maintained, the owner was very friendly and the afternoon tea was to die for, we couldn’t manage it all so he boxed up our cream tea for us to take away. Definitely worth a visit.
