Product code: MTRA

Locations: 6

This is a fantastic chance for you and your guest to enjoy a relaxed, unhurried and civilised journey on a steam train. The steam train has been around for over 200 years moving passengers from place to place. Seeing the trains in all their glory brings a real sense of history to your day and there is always plenty to see, making this a great day out.

Once you arrive at the venue you will need to exchange your voucher at the ticket office for your steam train tickets. The experience varies depending on the location you choose. Some journeys are return trips whilst others are all day rover tickets, you may be able to stop off en route to explore the local area on foot. Please check exact details upon booking. Depending on the location you may be able to visit other attractions at the venue such as a steam train museum. Please note that the Cumbria location is a narrow gauge railway.

Visited Bressingham Steam Museum to use these vouchers.

1) Pre-trip: the Bressingham website

We were visiting to use some vouchers that I had been given for my 21st birthday. It was very clear on the vouchers that they could not be used on days where there were events occurring at your chosen railway. We planned to visit on Sunday 3rd August. We checked the website in on July 15th and there were no events shown for 3rd August, there were however events shown for Saturdays 2nd and 9th August. There was however a note that Bressingham may have to close if there is persistent bad weather. We therefore assumed everything was ok. However, upon re-checking the website on 1st August, the event that had been showing as running on 2nd and 9th August, had been changed so it was now running from 2nd-10th August. We therefore had to reschedule our visit to last Saturday, 23rd August.

2) Visit itself

We arrived at Bressingham around lunchtime on an overcast day. Be aware that the car park and coach park are gravel, and can as a result become very muddy. There are also a number of fairly substantial pot holes in the car park. There is a sign directing visitors to the entrance, and another sign directing visitors to the toilets once through the entrance, and that is where the signs end. At no point is there an opportunity to pick up a site map. There is only one site map, and this is stuck up on the wall as you come out of where you pay to go in.

There are two areas to Bressingham, the steam museum and gardens and the garden centre which is at the opposite side of the main car park to where the main entrance to the steam museum and gardens is located. The "award winning restaurant" is located within the GARDEN CENTRE and NOT the steam museum. We only found this out once inside and we tried to get a drink Service in the cafe at the steam museum and gardens is painfully slow during lunch, so eating at the garden centre could well be a better option.

Another issue we found once we had finished our drinks is that the site shuts down for an hour for lunch between 12 noon and 1pm. Again, there is no mention of this on the website, nor were we told at any point during site entry. Had we known, we would have gone over to the garden centre. Between 12 noon and 1pm, only the on site cafe at the museum remains open (as presumably does the garden centre?) but all other areas of the site close, and train rides cease. There are three miniature railways in operation, each ride lasting for between 10 and 25 minutes.

Even with having to wait for everything to re-open at 1pm, we were done by 2:40pm, so stretching it to say this is a full day out.

The garden centre and shop across the car park are worth a visit. There is a nice selection of books, gorw your own plants and alcoholic beverages on sale.

Overall, I'm glad that I did this on vouchers, as I think it would have been a bit of a disappointment had we paid full price to get in.

Everything was great. Only niggle was that the train we planned to join had been cancelled and due to time took a diesel instead of the hoped for Steam.

Disappointed not to be hauled by a steam locomotive.
We were told on the phone that steam locomotion would be running on the day chosen.

I really enjoyed my time at the railway centre it brought back a lot memories when I use
to go train spotting in the 1950s and 1960s. I know the modern electrics are a lot more
cleaner and efficient but theres nothing like seeing a stream engine at work, there really
are a feat of engineering especially the coronation class 8P pacifics.

very enjoyable

The day we went was a Victorian themed event, with rolling stock from the site's museum of that era in use. The various displays were of real interest and we should have got there earlier in order to take it all in.
