I have been looking at this experience for a very long time and I finally was able to participate in this exciting experience. Upon arriving at Birmingham Wheels Raceway, we were greeted by a gentleman who asked me for my name and asked me to pay the £5 admission fee for my spectator, following this we were given a small booklet with my name printed in it along with the other participants. After parking up, being careful of the gravel slope, I went over to get changed into my racing gear and shortly after I was called in to be briefed. In the briefing they went in to a lot of detail regarding what would be happening throughout the day and what is expected of us regarding the rules and safety of yourself and the other drivers, this put everyone at ease due to it being very relaxed and they had a great way of simplifying these for all levels of drivers. After the safety briefing and being shown how to ‘buckle up’ we were put into groups and called over to get our helmets and get into the cars accordingly. My group was finally called up and we were given a Balaclava and a race helmet, one big enough for my head, and we waited patiently whilst the group before we battled it out on the oval track. Once walking over to the cars, we were briefed how to enter and exit the cars safely and to await one of the Staff members to strap us in and make sure we were comfortable and safe. Following on from that we were then told to start our engines and follow the pace car in order and once the pace car had set off we can start to battle it out. The race itself was brilliant, it kept me on edge the whole time and time flew past! Something which added to the excitement is watching your competitors spin out and the commentator going on about how well you are doing or that someone is coming up behind you. After all of the racing is finished you are finally debriefed and given certificates and the winners receive a Trophy. I really enjoyed my time there and they couldn’t have done anything better and the safety over at the Birmingham Wheels Raceway was clearly of the utmost importance to them as no one was injured and they made it very clear all of the time. The experience was highly authentic and I will be doing this again.
