Overview

Travel through stunning Cambridgeshire countryside and celebrate one of the most revolutionary ways to travel while enjoying a quintessentially British afternoon delicacy. Nene Valley Railway welcomes guests from far and wide and invites them to hop aboard one of their fine steam locomotives, which has been lovingly restored by a team of dedicated volunteers. Once sat comfortably, you’ll journey past three stops with the opportunity to stop off and explore. As you watch the world go by, you’ll be provided with plenty of fascinating facts about the railway from the Nene Valley team and will enjoy a delicious, traditional afternoon tea.

Once you arrive at Nene Valley make your way to the ticket office and exchange your voucher for some authentic train tickets before making your way to the platform. Once aboard, a wonderfully British afternoon tea will already be waiting for you, with the spread including warm scones with cream and jam, chocolate or Victoria sponge cake, sandwiches and either tea or coffee.

Departing from Wansford station, you will head west through the tunnel then back across the River Nene. Should you wish to stretch your legs, the station at Ferry Meadows Country Park is the perfect place to stop off. Explore the park’s three lakes that cover 120 acres, visit the information centre and be sure to check out the miniature steam railway. Your ride will then terminate at Peterborough station before the return journey begins. Don’t forget to look around the station and admire the other trains, including the famous Thomas the Tank Engine.

Please note, your voucher offers you a Rover Ticket and therefore does not restrict you to a specific timed train. If the steam train is unavailable for unforeseen reasons beyond the control of Nene Valley, it will be replaced by a diesel train.

Yes I recommend this product.

This was a birthday prezzie from a relation & it was an enjoyable day out. If you want to get off and have a stroll round the best stop is Ferry Meadows (Overton) as there are a few nice walks around the lakes. But be careful as there are not many trains (only 4 when we went). U really need to be on the 1st train out of Wansford station where there is plenty of free car parking.

Thank you for sharing your steam train experience with us. Please accept our sincerest apologies that the steam train was not operating on the day of your visit. Nene Valley do advise ‘Whilst every effort will be made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Nene Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances require'. Regrettably due to the age of the trains they are sometimes unavailable at short notice and replaced by a Diesel train. We hope that you still enjoyed elements of your day out and your experiences does not dissuade you from visiting Nene Valley again in the future.

Thank you for your feedback. I am ever so sorry to hear of your disappointment in the train being diesel. Occasionally, should the steam train be unable to run, they will replace this with a diesel one instead to allow the experience to go ahead. This is explained at the point of validation, however can of course only apologise that you felt let down by this. It is likewise stated in the description that you would be presented with a pre-prepared afternoon tea when getting on board, and so there is no choice with regards to the food delivered here. Again, I do apologise if this created any disappointment and will pass this feedback to the relevant department to look in to. Thank you again for your comments.
