Bird Handling at Riverside Falconry

Description

Riverside Falconry is set in the beautiful Tyne valley, Newburn with miles of open countryside and ancient woodlands, giving you the chance to enjoy the birds in their natural environment.

This two and a half hour bird handling experience offers you with the chance to get hands on with the magnificent birds of prey. You will appreciate these birds and their beauty and get to watch their sheer power in this memorable session in a way only Riverside Falconry can offer.

To begin with you will be introduced to four native and non-native hawks and owls and if the conditions are right you may even be able to carry out some flying to make the encounter extra special.

In addition to this as an added bonus, you will also have the opportunity to meet some of the mini beasts, handle snakes, lizards, frogs and stick insects.

In the event of the experience taking place outdoors, please wear appropriate footwear and warm clothing that you don’t mind getting muddy. Failing that why not grab your complimentary tea or coffee!

Half Day Falconry

Description

This is a fascinating introduction to an ancient and intriguing pursuit. See for yourself an extraordinary relationship between man and bird of prey. Falconry was originally introduced as a means of obtaining "food for the table". In Medieval Britain birds of prey were often present at grand occasions such as pageants, weddings and jousting tournaments. Even today seeing these magnificent birds up close is a very special experience and one which you won't forget.

You will be given an overview of the disciplines and history of falconry by one of the country's best falconers, followed by a brief introduction to the husbandry and welfare of birds and the equipment used in falconry. The course will end with the opportunity to fly a bird "to the fist" so you can experience the unforgettable sensation of having a magnificent bird of prey on your arm. Programmes vary depending on location.

Half Day Falconry at Coda Falconry

Description

Learn about the fascinating sport of falconry with this fully interactive half-day experience.

At Coda Falconry in Essex, you will be introduced to a variety of beautiful birds of prey including; buzzards, hawks and owls, where you will have a chance to handle and feed the birds before luring them, flying them to the gloved hand, as well as learning important falconry techniques like tying the ‘falconer’s knot’.

This experience is topped off by going out on a ‘Hawk Walk’ where you will take a Harris hawk out in the fields and surrounding woods in the Lee Valley Park area. You’ll see the stunning hawks in action as you call them from the trees to the gloved hand. A truly unforgettable experience that is perfect for anyone with a passion for birds of prey and who is curious about the art of falconry.

Hawk Walk at Riverside Falconry

Description

Riverside Falconry is set in the beautiful Tyne valley, Newburn with miles of open countryside and ancient woodlands, giving you the chance to enjoy the birds in their natural environment.

The walk takes place along the banks of the stunning Newburn Riverside which follows the Tyne.

Release the stresses of modern life like work and bills on this relaxing hawk walk.

Your experience will begin with the introduction of your walking partner, one of the Harris Hawks and a brief over view of what to expect from your friendly guide.

Along the way you will take in one of the more beautiful stretches of the river and you may even be able to see some of the local wildlife that includes other birds of prey, seals and even otters!

You will also pass major historical sites such as the site of the 1640 Battle of Newburn between the Scottish and English Armies and on to the Wlyam to Waggon Way, the birth place of George Stephenson - 'The Farther of the Railway'.

The walk is available to all ages, although as there is some off road walking involved, sensible footwear is advised.

Based at Byrkley Park Garden Centre, Hawksflight Falconry's informative and educational experiences are centred on conservation. Their aim is to educate all ages into the beauty and magnificence of these raptors and Owls with a hands on and practical approach through a variety of illustrated talks and experiences.

Hawksflight's friendly and knowledgeable staff welcome you to the centre and their passion for the birds of prey and Owls is evident as they guide you through the secret world of the silent hunters. The predators of the air!

Upon arrival you will be welcomed at the reception where you will booked in. You will then be introduced to the friendly and informative guide and be given an overview of what to expect from the experience, the history of the grounds and then more importantly be introduced to the magnificent birds of prey.

You will then learn about the birds of prey and Owls which they have at the centre and how they are looked after. You will cover topics such as husbandry, housing, diet and food preparation, weight control, training, falconry equipment and telemetry. You will also be shown how to tie the falconers knot and handle the birds safely.

Owl Encounter at Riverside Falconry

Owls are nocturnal birds that many people never get the chance to see, this is a unique opportunity for you and a friend to get up close to these impressive birds.

Owls have always held a magical spell over people and for hundreds of years been a major part of superstition and folklore in many cultures. This two and a half hour experience is ideal for anyone who has a passion for owls or even those who just want to find out more about these fascinating birds.

During this owl encounter you will handle and fly a range of native and non-native owls whilst learning about their habitat and how owls fly and hunt, as the handler gives fun and fascinating facts about them. You cannot fail to fall in love with these captivating birds.

As an extra bonus if you feel up to it you could meet one of their mini-beats.
